It's raining outside right now. The person(s) that made the decision to close the schools will either be a goat or a hero by the time school would have let out today.
My money is on goat.
Safe bet.
Because of the reliance on bus transportation, school closings are often tied to the impact of those buses on state, county and city snow and ice removal efforts, and not only to the potential danger to the buses and their passengers. As critical and important as that is.
One of the things they want to avoid is having a fleet of hundreds (if you count both county systems) of buses on the roads at the same time that crews are trying to get the roads cleared to move all the people who will have to get home this afternoon (today) or to work (most other snow days).
Downside is the number of working single-parent and both-working-parent families which have to make care arrangements for younger children. This often means a day w/o pay. As the Dog suggests, this is the situation that will result in Hero-Goat status. Usually, it's Goat, even if the snow comes, because of the inconvenience a school closing means to these families.
As with many of our institutions, school has become much more than just 6 hours of 3Rs. Sure, that's top priority, but it's also socialization, collaboration, exercise, competition, you name it. On radio this AM, most of the news was not the potential storm but, rather, the impact that the closings might or might not have on basketball and other schedules tonight.
There's always Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, and texting for that other stuff. Cell towers'll be busy today. Keep an eye on your download/upload speeds!
Goat, too, but maybe not for the "no snow" possibility reason.
