Comcrap to become Xfinity

Postby BigDog » Mon Feb 08, 2010 5:15 pm

From CNN.

Comcast doesn't like its name. Starting Feb. 12, 2010, the cable-television and Internet giant will roll out its new name, Xfinity, in 11 U.S. markets. A national campaign will be rolled out in television ads airing during the Winter Olympics. Comcast hopes the new moniker will help customers forget the high prices and poor customer service for which the company has been criticized in the past. Will the name change work? Probably not, but at least it'll sound a bit edgier when you're put on hold ... with Xfinity.

Will that be their name as they try to merge with NBC?

And if you have a complaint, you have to deal with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, which has been the telephone, electricity, natural gas czar until AT&T conned the legislature into taking cable away from communities and giving it to the state.

IURC's folks think AT&T cable complaints are telephone problems and don't, at first, want to take a Comcast problem.

Check out SB 135. AT&T is mad at Carmel.

Thanks, Mitch.

I don't know if you have AT&T U-Verse available in Bloomington, but if you do; try it. We dumped Comcrap back in September and U-Verse is MUCH better.

It's available in parts of Bloomington, but not everywhere in town.

Trouble with 3-in-1 services, despite the recent technological relationships, is that each user is looking for something different. For somebody it's a compromise.

You want good Internet up/down? This service is better than those.
Video quality? That's different. You gotta get that one.
Telephone? Clearest signal is the other guy.

"Everytime it snows, I lose everything!"
"I'll take bad video and phone for a screamin' Internet connection."
"The more people on the cable, the slower my downloads. The other one isn't set up like that."
"How come there're no council meetings on the cable?"
"They oughta stop televising the meetings. Make 'em shorter."

Compromise.

I was annoyed by this too. And Curmudgeon - I agree with your earlier posts somewhere around here about the History Channel going downhill. Ice Road Truckers and AxMen belong somewhere I suppose - but not on the History Channel.

Maybe you or Cur covered this in the History Channel 'plaint:
What network owns History (and Military and History Biography)?
Is it the same as Discovery, etc.?

Maybe it's a competiton thing. They need to outdo Spike, Bravo and the greatly sinking TRU-tv (old Court).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_(TV_channel)

Launched on January 1, 1995, the channel is owned by A&E joint venture (Hearst, Disney, NBC)[1] and operates, in various forms, in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, Israel, Spain, Poland, Italy, The Netherlands, and Latin America. The network was also available in South Asia under a deal between STAR TV and AETN International until November 21, 2008. The channel has consistently produced prime time ratings in the U.S. comparable to or higher than the A&E Network itself.[citation needed]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_Channel

On June 17, 1985, Discovery Channel was launched with $5 million in start-up capital from the BBC, the American investment firm Allen and Company, Venture America and several other investors. In the beginning it was available to 156,000 households and would broadcast for 12 hours between 3 p.m. and 3 a.m. with about 75 percent of the content new to American viewers.[2] John Hendricks is credited with founding of the channel and its parent company, then known as Cable Educational Network Inc, in 1982.[3]...

Discovery Channel is currently the most widely distributed cable network in the United States,[7] reaching more than 92 million households, part of its global audience of 431 million homes in 170 countries and territories.[8] Versions of the channel are seen in Latin America, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, India, Malaysia and other countries.[9]...
I once had a thread in 2004 titled "The Jews have become animals" referencing the indiscriminate bulldozing of Palestinian zoo, animals, blocks of homes with people living inside, cars, etc.

I was ridiculed and labeled a hateful anti-semite, a whore, a hag, a witch and on and on. In 2010, the hate goes on against me. Placing this here to save them the trouble.

Nino's Wiki research confirms what I suspect. The parent company is looking for ratings, not necessarily quality. NBC-Universal's broadcast offerings are in third or fourth place. I would guess they're having difficulty with the cable side.

Comcast and NBC-U -- interesting fit.
